High up in the heavenly capital of Lofty Realm, the bored goddess of harvest, Sakuna, spends her days in luxury and resting on the laurels of her deceased parents. Further down in the Lowly Realm, evil bandits chase a group of desperate people over a cliff. There is a bridge between the two kingdoms and there Sakuna encounters people for the first time.

In the subsequent encounter, the goddess and mortals cause a great explosion that brings them the discourage of the heavenly ruler Lady Kamuhitsuki. She banishes her to the island of Hinoe, a mysterious place on the border from heaven to earth, where Sakuna's parents once went home. She orders them to recquer the so-called "Island of Demons" from the catches of a monster horde.

As the daughter of a warrior god and a harvest goddess, Sakuna must regain her birth right in the untamed wilderness by facing the elements, fighting monsters and faring the land. The only chance people still have to get back their one-time life in the war-smashed Lowly Realm is to help their immortal protector. Together these unusual competitors must defeat both the land and the demons of Hinoe.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was developed by Edelweiss, the 2-person team who is also behind the popular Indian hit Astebreed. It combines side-scroller action with a well-thought-out manufacturing and farm simulation. Players take on the role of Sakuna, a warped goddess of harvest, banished on a dangerous island with a group of people.
